Introduction

I'm Tor Pinney - cruising sailor, writer and most recently founder of Strong Yachts. I'd like to tell you about an exceptional sailboat I have helped create, one based on a design intended to permit considerable customization by each owner. I have dubbed these boats Strong Yachts apropos of their essential character.

My ideas for Strong Yachts are based on nearly 150,000 nautical miles logged under sail, 15 years living aboard sailboats full time, and 10 years helping other sailors find and acquire the boat they want. If you've read our concept in this web site, thenyou've gotten the gist of what we're aiming for with our boats. Strength, obviously. Aluminum hulls are the strongest in the world for their weight - even stronger than steel! - and that translates into greater safety both offshore and close in. Other characteristics of our Strong 45 include low maintenance, heartwarming performance, relative stiffness (she sails upright, not on her ear; ergo...) comfort & sea kindliness, professional craftsmanship, clean good looks and relative affordability. Strong Yachts avoid much of the expensive glitz and glitter finish so common in most of today's boat show boats. Did I leave anything out?

Ah, yes. We build quite a few features into all Strong Yachts that few other boat builders, and no production builders that I know of, include in theirs. I'll list some of them here in my next update. They're impressive, intelligent and based on a half-century of combined boat building and live-aboard cruising experience.

Description

Because these are semi-custom-built boats, our customers are welcome to change many of the features to suit themselves. Cutter, ketch, schooner or sloop; center cockpit or aft; raised salon or flush deck; a more plush finish; less draft... We invite each individual customer to decide how they want their boat tailored to meet their needs. Ease of customization is one of the many benefits of metal boat construction. And if customizing our stock plans doesn't do it for you, we'll draw an entirely new design just for you. Whatever it takes to create your dreamboat, chances are we can do it.

Here is a brief description of the Strong 45 RS as I see her. A much more complete builder's specification is available on request:

Hull

  • Aluminum construction, fully insulated

  • Patented Strongall® construction

  • Generous beam, long fin keel, inboard skeg-hung rudder

  • Protruding rub rails

  • Transom stern with integral, drop-down boarding/swim steps

  • Hydrodynamic shoal draft keel, combining excellent windward performance with high stability

  • Divided chain locker, port side led aft for all-chain storage

  • Stern anchor locker

  • All floorboards, storage compartment lids, refrigerator tops, etc. secured for capsize

  • Deep, white epoxy-painted bilges, deeper sump

  • Polished natural aluminum topsides (painted hull is optional for aluminum construction; standard for steel)

Deck & House

  • Aft cockpit with a raised salon house and forward cabin trunk (all other configurations are also available)

  • Wide side decks

  • Off-white Treadmaster (or optionally painted) non-skid

  • Off-white painted decks & coach house

  • Raised, 4"-to-6" bulwarks all the way around the decks

  • 36"-high, heavy-gauge stainless steel stanchions. Solid railing around the stern, from the transom boarding gate to the port & starboard boarding gates. Life lines forward from the side boarding gates to the bow pulpit.

  • Custom, integrated cockpit canvas system enabling full enclosure

  • Swivel-mounted wind generator aft

  • Large opening hatches and portholes throughout, and dorades

  • Heavy-duty, twin anchor rollers extended away from the stem head

  • No exterior wood is standard, exterior wood trim is optional

Rig

  • Marconi-rigged cutter

  • Over-sized standing rigging with Sta-Lok terminal fittings

  • Running backstays

  • Spilt backstay for easier stern boarding

  • Mainsail halyard & reefing lines led aft to cockpit, large self-tailing winches, line stoppers

  • Roller furling genoa and staysail halyards secured at the mainmast (port side) with separate stoppers & cleats so they can share a single winch

Interior/Layouts

My raised salon configuration (lots of other options available):

Two possible center cockpit configurations with either one or two proper beds:

  • A "clean workboat finish" is standard. Fancier is optional.

  • Centerline, easy in & out, real queen bed in the master cabin

  • Captain's sea berth aft of nav table converts to settee and/or workbench area in port.

  • Large, accessible engine compartment with room for optional generator, etc.

Tankage

  • Fuel: 180 gal.

  • Water: 150 gal. in 2 tanks (plus watermaker)

  • Holding: 35 gal.

Other Notes

  • Yanmar 54 hp diesel engine

  • 6’4” headroom belowdecks.

  • You can see out when sitting down in the raised salon

  • Set up for pedestal wheel steering for the boat shows, but enables me to remove that later and switch to tiller steering for myself. This is not a feature I expect many others to emulate. I just prefer a tiller on boats that are balanced well enough to be steered that way. My tiller is positioned so it’s easy to flip up or back, leaving the cockpit entirely open and clear of steering apparatus. (That's what I most like about a tiller over a wheel!)
